Detroit (pronounced /d??tr??t/) (French: Detroit, meaning "strait"[5], pronounced [det?wa] (help・info)) is the largest city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the seat of Wayne County. Detroit is a major port city on the Detroit River, in the Midwest region of the United States. Located north of Windsor, Ontario, Detroit is the only major[6] U.S. city that looks south to Canada. It was founded in 1701 by the Frenchman Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac.

It is known as the world's traditional automotive center ? "Detroit" is a metonym for the American automobile industry ? and an important source of popular music, legacies celebrated by the city's two familiar nicknames, The Motor City and Motown.[7][8] Other nicknames emerged in the twentieth century, including Rock City, Arsenal of Democracy (during World War II),[9] The D, D-Town, Hockeytown, and The 3-1-3 (its telephone area code).

In 2007, Detroit ranked as the United States' eleventh most populous city, with 916,952 residents.[11] At its peak, the city was the fourth largest in the country, but since 1950 the city has seen a major shift in its population to the suburbs.

The name Detroit sometimes refers to the Metro Detroit area, a sprawling region with a population of 4,467,592[12] for the Metropolitan Statistical Area, making it the nation's eleventh-largest, and a population of 5,405,918[13] for the nine-county Combined Statistical Area as of the 2007 Census Bureau estimates. The Detroit-Windsor area, a critical commercial link straddling the Canada-U.S. border, has a total population of about 5,700,000.

Lifestyles for rising professionals in Detroit reflect those of other major cities.[42] This dynamic is luring many younger residents to the downtown area.[42][43] Luxury high rises such as the three Riverfront Towers have views of Hart Plaza and Canada. The New Center area contains examples of historic housing redevelopment. The Westin Book-Cadillac Hotel will include a number of luxury condos. The east river development plans include more luxury condominium developments. A desire to be closer to the urban scene has attracted young professionals to take up residence among the mansions of Grosse Pointe just outside the city. Detroit's proximity to Windsor, Ontario, provides for spectacular views and nightlife, along with Ontario's 19-and-older drinking age.

愛知県豊田市と姉妹都市関係にある。人口は951,270人（2000年国勢調査）であるが、2007年の推計では916,952人と減少傾向にある。ピークと比べ半減しており、特に人口の8割を黒人が占め、白人の多くは郊外の衛星都市に住んでいる。デトロイトの都市圏(MSA)の人口は4,452,559人にも上り、全米第9位の規模。フリントなどを含めた広域都市圏(CSA)の人口は5,357,538人(いずれも2000年国勢調査)で、やはり全米9位の規模である。自動車産業が有名（後述）。

1960年代より、空洞化現象が著しくなり市街地のほとんどは空き家同然となり、治安は著しく悪化。米国100大都市で最悪の犯罪率を記録。 現在でも、治安の悪化は続いているものの行政当局によるデトロイトルネッサンス運動（再生デトロイト計画）が進み、ホテル、領事館なども中心部にある。 日本総領事館も邦人から、治安のいい郊外に設置するよう強い希望があったが、デトロイト市行政当局の運動に協力する意味合いを含めて市街地に設置した経緯がある。

デトロイトは大きなカルデア人住民及びこの国で最大のアラブ系アメリカ人コミュニティーの本拠地でもある。最近、この地域はアジア系アメリカ人及びヒスパニック・コミュニティーが成長していると確認された。この都市の南西部側は大きなメキシコ系アメリカ人コミュニティーが含まれる。

デトロイト市の輸送機関サービスはデトロイト市交通局 (Detroit Department of Transportation 略 DDOT) によって提供されている。デトロイト交通局は路線バスと障害者向けのパラトランジットサービスを直営で行っている。なお、デトロイト市を含むデトロイト大都市圏の4つの郡が共同で地域交通局(Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation 略 SMART)を運営しており、そのバスもデトロイト市内に乗り入れている。

デトロイト市はダウンタウン地域で2.9マイルのループ路線をサービスしている、ピープル・ムーバーと知られるライトレール・システムを運行するデトロイト交通公社の運営も行っている。
